KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 — In Malaysia, twin air tragedies MH370 and MH17 topped this year’s Google search list, while the late DAP veteran lawmaker Karpal Singh was the most searched personality.
In Google’s Trending Searches of 2014, the popular search engine noted the “sombre note” in Malaysia with the two Malaysia Airline (MAS) flights taking the first and third spot on the list.

On March 8, MH370 went missing with 239 people on board, while MH17 was shot down while in Ukrainian airspace just months later on July 17, claiming all 298 lives on board.

“In between, the World Cup in Brazil offered the nation temporary relief from the twin air tragedies. Of special note is how news outlet Astro Awani became a highly sought after online news resource on the back of the air tragedies due to its round-the-clock live coverage,” Google said in the release of its annual Year in Malaysian Search, with Astro Awani placing fourth.

The two disasters also made it to Google’s Trending Mobile Searches of 2014, with MH370 and MH17 taking second and third spots after the World Cup 2014 in searches using mobile devices.
Earlier today, Twitter revealed that MH370 and MH17 were among the most widely-discussed Moments globally on the micro-blogging site this year.

The double disasters were previously also listed as among the most discussed topics on the Facebook social network, coming in at seventh in a list that was topped by the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

On the most searched topics of 2014, new local car Perodua Axia which debuted at the  selling price of RM24,600, online public school management system SPS, the federal government’s cash handout BR1M, the launch of Google Street View imagery for the search engine’s maps, new airline Malindo Air and local hit drama series RinduAwak 200 per cent took up the remaining six spots.

The list of Trending People of 2014 in Malaysia was also topped by tragedies, with veteran lawyer Karpal Singh and international comedian Robin Williams — who died in a July 17 car accident and committed suicide on August 11 respectively — taking first and second spot.

“Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence claimed third spot ahead of Malaysian model Felixia Yeap — who made waves when she converted to Islam this year — and celebrity gossip magnet Hanez Suraya rounded off the top five people searches,” Google said.

The other five personalities most searched for in Malaysia are Indonesian actress Luna Maya, retired F1 racer Michael Schumacher, up and coming DAP politician Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, actor Keith Foo and Spanish footballer Juan Mata.
“Google searches continue to act as a cultural barometer that gives us a real snapshot of the major events, popular individuals and top trends that collectively made an impact on the life of Malaysians,” said Zeffri Yusof, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Google Malaysia.

“Google is where most Malaysians turn to for information and we hope the lists we’ve compiled on Malaysian searches reflect the national zeitgeist or ‘spirit of the times’,” he added in the same statement by Google Malaysia.
